Group I(Alkali Metals)

Physical Properties
  • Soft, can be cut easily using knife
  • Good heat and electric conductors
  • Low density
  • Low melting and boiling point
  • Silver grey in colour
Chemical Properties
  • Lose 1 electron to form 1+ positive ions.
  • React violently in contact with water
  • React with oxygen to form basic oxide
  • React with acid to form hydrogen
 
 
 
 
 Reason explaining Reactivity of the Metals
As the amount of outer electron shell increases, the outermost electrons become further away from the nucleus. This caused the strong electrostatic force in between the electron and protons in the nucleus to become weak and make the outer electron to be easily lost. The easier it is to lose an electron, the more reactive the element is
